Know when to wash your sheets!
Sundays are the best days spent in bed, there is no better feeling than waking up and remembering it’s weekend. We all enjoy breakfast in bed at some times of our lives, but it’s not just food stains that can make us ask ourselves: “How often should I wash my sheets?”
What is not a surprising question being that it is a domestic task, there are many opinions on how often it should be done. We spend a third of our lives in bed, 56 hours a week of sweat, body oils and dead skin.
So how often do you have to wash bed linen?
At the very least, you should wash your sheets once a week, says Philip Tierno, director of Clinical Microbiology and immunology at the University of New York.
That’s because the second you lie on your sheets, you’re infecting her with millions of dead cells a day, lotions, makeup, sweat, hair, dandruff, animals, fungi and dirt particles. Everyone comes with a dose of unhealthy bacteria. Not washing the sheets regularly can contribute to increased suffering by health problems such as asthma and allergies.
If you, your partner, your child or someone in the family is sick, if you usually sleep naked, or if you go to bed without showering after doing any exercise, you may have to consider washing your sheets more often.
The climate is a factor as well. Depending on your lifestyle, the sheets can go through more wear in the summer months, because we sweat more during the day on hot days.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself to estimate the frequency of your washing needs:
• Do you sleep alone?
• Do you sleep naked?
• If you don’t sleep alone, who sleeps with you?
- Your wife/partner?
- Your son?
- Your pet?
• Do you take a shower before you go to bed at night?
• Have you been sick recently?
• Do you eat in bed?
• Do you sound too much at night?
