How do I know what type of rug to use?

To find out what type of rug to use, Consider the environment, the decorating style, the desired material, cleaning needs, and the appropriate size and shape. Choose durable, easy-to-clean materials for high-traffic areas (such as living rooms) and softer materials for relaxation areas (such as bedrooms). Determine the size so that it complements the furniture and doesn’t create a feeling of disconnection.

1. Analyze the environment
  • Room: In high-traffic areas, such as the living room or hallways, choose low-pile rugs and synthetic fibers, which are easier to clean and more durable. For bedrooms, shaggy rugs can offer more comfort and coziness.
  • Flooring: If your flooring already has patterns or textures, opt for more neutral and plain rugs to avoid the two visually “clashing.” If the flooring is neutral, you can be bolder with colorful and patterned rugs.
  • Function: Low-pile rugs are sufficient for thermal and acoustic insulation in tropical countries, while high-pile rugs offer more comfort but can be more difficult to clean.
2. Think about aesthetics and style.
  • Colors: For a balanced environment, if the furniture is colorful, choose a more neutral rug. If the furniture is neutral, the rug can be the pop of color, allowing you to be bolder with patterns.
  • Patterns: Use simple geometric patterns to avoid overwhelming the space. Bold prints can be used sparingly or in rooms with more neutral decor.
  • Style: Rugs with high (fluffy) pile are more modern and cozy. Plain, pileless rugs are more practical and suitable for high-traffic areas.                                               3. Choose the size and format.

    • Size: The rug should be proportional to the size of the room. In the living room, it is recommended that the rug be large enough for the armchairs and sofas to fit on it, or at least large enough for the wheels of the furniture to rest on it. Avoid rugs that are too small, as they can make the room look disproportionate.
    • Shape: The most common shapes are rectangular and round. The round shape is ideal for creating relaxation areas and can be positioned near individual seats. The rectangular shape works well in living and dining rooms.
    4. Consider the materials
    • Synthetic fibers : They are more durable and easier to clean, ideal for families with children and pets.
    • Natural fibers (wool, cotton): They provide a pleasant texture, but generally require more care when cleaning. Wool, for example, is comfortable, but can be more difficult to clean.
    • Leather: Genuine leather is durable, but requires special care when cleaning. Synthetic leather is a more affordable alternative and is easier to clean superficially.
